In 1940-41 the current Rec Center was built by the
Federal Govt. for $88,000 and was dedicated in September 1943 to
soldier entertainment, to be a ‘home away from home’ to men in
uniform visiting Greenville. Over 3,000 citizens attended the
ceremony, and were treated to a tour of the facility thereafter.
Over 800,000 troops and GIs passed through the doors of the building
before being decommissioned in 1945. The Borough of Greenville
bought the building from the Federal Govt. in 1945 for $12,500 and
it became the center of recreational activity in Greenville in
1946. In 1948 GALSA was created as a provider of recreational
programming and activities for the Greenville community and its
surrounding area while managing the Borough’s park system. For 60
years this partnership has continued to be the only recreational
establishment in Northern Mercer County and has been looked at as a
model organization for other communities wishing to start their own
program.
The Rec Center can be rented for $40/hour (minimum of two (2)
hours). The gym and/or the lobby itself can be rented for $25.00
each (minimum two hours). Rentals can be scheduled through GALSA’s
business office from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday-Friday. Total Rec Center and lobby
rentals include free pool and ping-pong, gym rentals do not.
